The Dalai Lama: A Flexible but Firm World Leader

The role of the Dalai Lama might be born out of religion, but the current incarnation is most definitely seen as a world leader as well as a religious one. Tenzin Gyatso is the 14th reincarnation of the Dalai Lama and also its longest living incumbent. As the head monk of the Gelug School of Tibetan Buddhism, the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize winner has spent a lifetime advocating for the rights of the Tibetan people and promoting non-violent solutions.

The Dalai Lama remains a contentious figure for the Chinese Government, however, as long as Tibet’s political status continues to be a matter of dispute. Beijing officials view the monk as ‘separatist’, despite Tenzin Gyatso’s assertion that he seeks autonomy for Tibet within China, rather than its independence.[Source]
