Dharamshala: China’s fallout from the coronavirus outbreak has thrown a harsh spotlight on its totalitarian regime and the scrutiny is only mounting as global political, social, economic and environmental repercussions of the Wuhan-originated pandemic continues to unfold.

‘Lockdown Ruminations, Reflection on Tibet in the Times of COVID-19 pandemic’, a collection of 15 research articles and commentaries released by the Tibet Policy Institute on Friday, offers an in-depth analysis of the impacts of the COVID-19 on China’s global posturing in terms of its political, economic and moral leadership and explores the centrality of the Tibet issue to understanding the CCP’s long-sighted agenda of redefining universal human rights, civic and political freedom. The volume is edited by senior research fellow, Dr Tenzin Desal.
“Since last year this COVID-19 pandemic which originated in China has affected a global crisis. As a research institute, we have felt it was important to highlight how the Tibetan researchers look at the impacts of this pandemic on the Chinese leadership and world around,” said Dr Tsewang Gaylpo Arya, TPI Director at the launch today.
One of the important impacts he found was the global attitudinal and policy shift vis-à-vis China. By first seeking to obscure its culpability in the global spread of COVID-19, then furthering its territorial expansionism at the height of coronavirus outbreak, Dr Arya said the CCP regime’s true totalitarian face has unmasked.
The think tank director also spoke on opportunities that came along with this radical shift, centrally in the form of a re-appreciation of the Tibet issue. A conducive environment, he said, has presented for the Tibet discourse to take a centre stage globally when it comes to lessons on dealing with the CCP govt.

“This is what we Tibetans have been saying for the last 60 years. Now the world has realised that what the Tibetans has been saying was right all along. In that sense, the global COVID crisis has provided a platform for the Tibet cause,” Dr Arya said.
“Hence, in this volume, our scholars have dealt with different subjects and the different impacts in each area. This is a compilation of all the findings.”
The research articles have been published both internationally and nationally in digital versions. The collected volume is a reproduction in printed form.
